Birthday Cake Fun

This weekend was supposed to be a "day of beauty" for the pups but it is so cold, they dodged the clippers for one more weekend. At least one of us got beautified though...I am back to my natural color... ah hem..

No clipping meant lots of time to bake and frost a cake.
My inspiration came from these adorable plates and napkins I bought at Target.

At work, we pick names and make a dessert for that person's birthday. It is supposed to be a surprise, but as usual, I let the cat out of the bag for my person. So I asked her what she would like me to make and she said she loved the raspberry vanilla cupcakes I had made for the Christmas Party.

I wasn't feelin' the cupcake thing today but I took that idea and made a cake. I made a rich vanilla cake and spooned raspberry jam on the top of each pan before I baked them.
I spread a thin layer of jam on the bottom layer before I frosted the layers. I also put jam in the frosting to add even more flavor.

I was originally thinking I would cut out paper peace signs, use them as a stencil and sprinkle colored sugar over top to get a design. Well, after all that measuring and baking, I lost my ambition. I started to put sugar around the outside and then realized I could still make a peace sign, just a giant one! I made a small one too, with aqua colored sugar, on the right. It might be a little hard to see.

The point is, have fun with it. It doesn't have to look perfect.
Do, however, invest in an offset spatula, it will make life much easier (hey, I had to have one Martha moment..sheesh!).

I also bought this topper, but I think I will save it for another day. I am capable of editing, sometimes.

Instead of regular old candles, find some cute ones and put them in one corner, just to be chic.

And yes, in case you are wondering...it is still snowing 1:03 pm 4/14/13.
